In the car market of India, each drop of fuel counts. At present, the vehicular efficiency is rapidly becoming the priority factor for the choice of new cars by the customers. Also the auto companies have begun an intense drive for having that extra mile with each drop. Presently, each car in India is equipped with a certain fuel efficiency rating which also decides the success of a vehicle in the market. Since its launch in 1999, Maruti Alto, largest selling car had dominated the market with the quality- tag of being the most fuel efficient vehicle delivering about 19.7 km per litre. Since a long time, Maruti has been backed by low combustion engines and harping on the higher fuel efficiency for its cars. Maruti also launched a new variant of its decade lime Alto to defeat competitors in the emerging car competition. The company also added a new 1 litre K Series engine in this model. This addition provided the fuel efficiency of 20.2 km per litre setting a benchmark for other carmakers.
Hyundai Motors, the second largest carmaker of country, also added several new features in its popular model Hyundai i10. The company added a new 1.2 litre engine in i10 which now provides a higher mileage of 20.36 km/ litre. Arvind Saxena, Hyundai Motor’s director (marketing & sales) stated that the new engine is very much prudent in fuel consumption. The auto industry of India is slowly moving towards regime of fuel efficiency. China has already got a fuel-efficiency need of more than 15 km per litre for each car that is sold. On the other hand, Australia and Japan have presently got the standard of 15km per litre. This might increase to 18.5 km per litre by 2012.
As the fuel efficiency is directly connected to the price of running of vehicles so the new vehicles have got small engines so that there will be less consumption of fuel. Tata Motors, the largest auto company of the country has the credit of making Tata Nano, the most fuel efficient car which delivers 23.7 km for each litre of fuel. The company has also introduced the most fuel efficient sedan of the country, the Tata Indigo CS which runs 23 km per litre of fuel.
