Datsun is yet to make a mark in the entry-level hatchback segment. While its partner (Datsun is owned by Nissan), Renault, was able to fill the void with the launch of the KWID, the Japanese carmaker is yet to see the emergence of its stalwart. It seems the automaker now has all its attention on the upcoming hatch, the Redi-GO.
As per a report in NDTV, the car is likely to be launched on April 14, 2016. Though under covers, the four-wheeler has been spied earlier on Indian roads. The car is based on the same CMF-A platform that is found in the KWID. It is unlikely that Datsun would borrow the design from its partner’s offering as it has insisted that the Redi-GO will be a completely different product (though we still believe the two cars will have quite a few similarities).
The company might employ the same engine as offered in the Renault KWID. The 0.8-litre mill produces 53bhp with 72Nm in Renault’s product. While a 5-speed manual gearbox is likely to come as standard, an optional automatic transmission by the carmaker is highly anticipated as well. This is because the automatic technology is now gaining pace in the Indian market since customers are quite willing to use the same. The power figures are comparable to those of the Maruti Alto 800’s, which are 47bhp and 69Nm. See Datsun Redi Go vs Kwid vs Alto 800 to have a detailed comparison report of the three hatchbacks.
The Redi-GO is coming at a time when Datsun’s other two models, the GO and the GO+, have failed to give the company the required number of sales. The entry-level hatchback made its first appearance at the Auto Expo 2014 and will rival the likes of the Renault KWID and the Maruti Alto 800. Expect the launch price to fall somewhere around Rs. 2.5 lac (ex-showroom).
