Notably, production was hit at General Motor’s Halol plant early this year when employees went on strike for six weeks. The current promotions are seen as a keep happy mechanism to dissuade the workers from going on strike and to create a positive environment at the plant. In all, there are around 900 permanent workers in addition to few hundred contractual workers. The permanent workers are involved in production while the contractual workers do the housekeeping, material handling work at the plant, said sources. In an interview, P Balendran, vice-president, corporate affairs GM India reportedly said that the company is one of the highest payers and tries that workers have no complaints.
