The Japanese carmaker, Honda has currently dropped its plans of introducing the Jazz based crossover Vezel in India. The vehicle was unveiled at the recently concluded Tokyo Motor Show, and it is expected to make its entry in the country, but with the regular depreciating rupee value and high input cost has forced the manufacturer to delayed its plans. Now, seeing the growing compact SUV segment, Honda is planning to launch a new compact SUV based on Brio hatchback, which will directly compete against the likes of Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport and Terrano.
Honda's Brio platform is a very flexible and we have already witnessed two classic model Amaze compact sedan and Mobilio based on the same. So, it will be an excellent strategy to develop a small SUV which will be cost effective as well. This versatile platform can be extended and accommodate a longer wheelbase.
The new compact SUV will also share its engine options and interiors with the Amaze. So, the Brio based SUV will get the 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol and a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel mill. It is expected that the compact SUV could make its way to India by 2015-16. Till then, Honda will be launching a series of new products including fourth generation City, Mobilio MPV and new generation Jazz. Moreover, the company will also launch the next Honda Accord premium sedan with a diesel powertrain.
