Chevrolet had introduced the Sail U-VA last year and now it has got the Sail NB to compete in the C segment. The C segment has been competitive with some tried and tested products like the Mahindra Verito, Ford Classic and the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire. Space is one of the best USPs of the Sail NB and even the Sail U-VA, and this is what Chevrolet is relying on. The added advantage that the Sail has is that it gets a 1.3-litre multijet engine that also powers the best-seller DZire. So, how does it fare against competition? We pit it against them.
Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire v/s Chevrolet Sail NB:
Maruti Suzuki has been segment leader in the C segment as the new DZire doesn’t just avail the excise duty in engine displacement, but it also has body length of under 4 metres. The previous generation DZire was a segment leader too and now the added benefits of the new gen makes it more tempting. Though the Sail wins it hands down on space and external styling, as the boot looks better integrated and even the size of the boot much larger. The DZire beats it in features and Maruti Suzuki’s badge value.
Mahindra Verito v/s Chevrolet Sail NB
Mahindra has done a fine job of changing the dull and boring looking Logan into a Verito. The Verito always had acres of spaces, frugal diesel engine and decent driving characteristics and the Sail too is good at all this. It gets the 1.3-litre multijet engine that India’s largest selling diesel engine. The petrol mill on the Sail gets an added advantage of being under 1.2-litre, which will help them get a cut and reduce the cost of the vehicle. The call between a Verito and the Sail is a close one, we will pick the Verito for the Mahindra badge.
Ford Classic v/s Chevrolet Sail NB
Since the introduction of the new Fiesta, Ford rebadged the old Fiesta as Classic. This has been one of our favourites in the C segment as it is an amazing driver’s car. Those using it for long runs should prefer the diesel, as it is a highly efficient mill. The Classic is definitely the best in its segment in terms of ride and handling and we see no one reaching this level. The Sail NB has a good and pliant ride. The advantage that Sail gets is more efficient 1.2-litre petrol engine and a tad more space at the rear. Those who need the car to be driven by a chauffeur, we recommend the Sail NB, and for thse who wish to drive, nothing can be better than the Ford Classic in the C segment.
