The first Indian Grand Prix Formula 1 race in October has kick-started the interest in the Indian sportscar manufacturers to consider the options with renewed interest. Global car manufacturers on one hand like Toyota’s motorsports wing, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) and Nissan’s estranged sports car division NISMO is gathering strength with its new experiments on their respective car models. But, right in India we have three such car manufacturers begging for attention. Jayem Automotive is the Coimbatore based motorsports car manufacturer who has tied-up with Dallara Auto of Italy.
The company’s existence is not very recent. In fact it has been operating for a decade now. The company is basically known for organizing local motorsports events in the country. The recent tie-up is to develop racing cars in co-ordination with the Italian company. Chinkara Motors is another Mumbai based motorsports car developer who has already shown some proficiency in the field. The Chinkara Roadster 1.8S name rings a bell for few. This two-seater racing car is developed based on what was known as Lotus Seven, which is now popularly known as Caterham Seven. The waiting period of three-four months speaks of the popularity of this car. This car sells at Rs 26 lakhs in India.
San Motors on the other hand is not as popular as Chinkara Motors. The Goa based motorsports car manufacturer is not completely devoid of racing cars in the field, but not with something to boast about either. The 1.6L engine convertible is a two-seater sports car, but quite a dud seller selling at slow pace of two to three units a month. But, San Motors did not compromise with some unrecognised sportscar manufacturer here. It went far ahead from its league and tied-up with the renowned French sports car manufacturer Renault to source the 1.6L engine. Unwilling to give up, the domestic car manufacturer expects to reach out to the stars. New convertibles from San Motors are on the pipe-line with some improved power and torque numbers.
