The British automotive company Jaguar Land Rover, owned by the Tata Motors India is now thinking to assemble its luxury cars in India in the coming next three to five years. The Global Brand Director of Jaguar, Adrian Hallmark mentioned that the company is currently looking at scope of assembling cars in India. Since volumes in India are very small at present the company will consider this step as it moves forward, he added. Upon being enquired about the probable timeline when the assembling of cars would begin in India, Mr. Hallmark stated that nothing is decided as of now but three to five years down the line the company can imagine this idea being materialized. Mr. Hallmark did not comment on the any other detail like the first car to be assembled in India or the possible location of the assembly unit.
In India, the 2010-11 fiscal year saw an immense rise in the total sales of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles as compared to the 2009-2010 fiscal year. The sales in 2010-2011 were 891 units whereas the sales were 242 units in the year prior to that. Currently, the British company assembles Land Rover’s Freelander at the Tata Motors’ plant in India which is located in Pune. In order to meet the demand in India, Jaguar Land Rover is also planning to start an engine manufacturing facility in the country. However, the investments on this planned facility would be lesser than the current investment of 355 million pounds being invested in an engine plant in UK.
