The Sonet recently started showing up at dealerships across the country, hinting at its imminent launch. Kia has now announced that the sub-4m SUV will officially go on sale on September 18. Like the Seltos, Kia will offer the Sonet in the GT Line and Tech Line trims with multiple variants under each.
The Kia SUV, which is based on the Hyundai Venue, features a different top hat while the platform and powertrains are shared. The GT trim is sportier of the two and features red inserts like the bigger Seltos.
The Sonet’s cabin draws cues from the Seltos with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system integrated into the instrument panel. Other features on offer include ventilated front seats, air purifier and auto AC. It will come with standard safety features such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.
Kia will offer the Sonet with the same engine options as its Hyundai counterpart. Let’s take a look at the variant-wise powertrain options and their output figures:

The Sonet will be offered with multiple transmission options depending on the variant-powertrain combo chosen. Unlike the Hyundai Venue, Kia won’t be offering its sub-4m SUV’s turbo-petrol variant with a manual gearbox. Having said that, the Sonet is the first sub-4m SUV to get a 6-speed torque converter unit paired to its diesel engine. It is also the second SUV in the segment to feature the new iMT (intelligent manual transmission) clutchless manual gearbox after the Hyundai Venue.

We expect Kia to price the Sonet from Rs 6.60 lakh to Rs 12.90 lakh (ex-showroom). It will take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon. It will also rival the upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser, Renault Kiger, and Nissan Magnite.
