The Lamborghini Countach that debuted in the 1970s has been an icon of the automotive industry for its bold design and performance. For its 50th anniversary, the icon has been reimagined as a modern day Lamborghini with new-age hybrid tech for its V12 powertrain. The new Countach has been unveiled at the Quail event in the USA as part of the Monterey Car Week.
The full name of this new limited edition model is Countach LPI 800-4. At its core, it still has Lamborghini’s brilliant 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 with the addition of a 48V electric motor that is powered by a supercapacitor. The engine makes 780PS of the new Countach’s total output of 814PS, which is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed automated manual transmission. This hybrid powertrain is based on what was debuted on the Sian. This Countach is a lot more powerful than the original, with a claimed 0-100kmph time of just 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 355kmph.
It is the first time that Lamborghini has revived an old moniker for a new car but this one is also a tribute to the original. The styling of the Countach LPI 800-4 is a modern interpretation of the old one’s design in terms of the overall wedge-like shape and the wheel arches. It also has similarly positioned air intakes and vents cut into the sides with air scoops ahead of the rear haunches. Sadly, Lamborghini could not include pop-up headlamps but the new rectangular lights for the 2021 Countach still look stylistic and retro.

Around the rear, the Countach LPI 800-4 features the same three-unit taillamps as the Sian with vents underneath that make up the rear bumper. The rest of the rear end is made of the carbon fibre diffuser with a quad-exit exhaust that mimics the original Countach. The minimalist styling of the rear emphasises how wide and how low this performance car really is. It also doesn’t feature a fixed rear wing, instead opting for an active setup that sits flush with the bodywork when not in use.

Lamborghini chose to debut this tribute in this specification for a good reason too. The colour seen here is called Bianco Siderale which is reminiscent of the Countach LP 400 S that belonged to the company’s founder, Feruccio Lamborghini. The white paint has hints of pearlescent blue to make it stand out from a regular white Lamborghini.
Pop open the scissor doors to step into the cabin which is finished in red leather on the debut model. As a special edition vehicle, this is where most of the lucky owners of this new Countach will be able to personalise it the most in terms of the look, the colours, and the materials to go for a modern or a classic car ambience. Aside from that, this modern Lamborghini has some modern features like the digital driver’s display, the 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre, climate control and various driving modes. This particular car also had a lot of carbon fibre details around the cabin and the console which saves weight and matches the performance characteristics of the car.
This new hybrid Lamborghini is not just a celebration of the Countach. The powertrain technology inside it is a sign of things to come, with the Aventador’s replacement due to arrive soon. The brand has already committed to electrifying its lineup by 2024, with an EV to be launched sometime between 2025 and 2030.
Only 112 units of the Countach LPI 800-4 will be produced. It’s not some random number though as it references the internal project name for the original Countach’s development: LP 112. There is no exact word on price but expect it to cost a couple of million in whichever Western currency fits your location, with deliveries expected to begin from the first quarter of 2022.
