Jaguar Land Rover’s lowest-priced model Freelander 2 SUV is reported to be spotted near Tata’s assembly plant near Pune. The Freelander 2 SUV, which is now available in India through CKD route, is presently being assembled at the Tata’s integrated assembly unit at Chikli, Pune. The spied images reveal a highly camouflaged SUV, which means that the British auto major has some cosmetic changes for the revamped SUV in store. However, there are others who think that the alterations in the new SUV might not be as major as anticipated.

A few reports also suggest that this might be the company’s initiative to increase the localisation of the SUV to further reduce the Land Rover Freelander 2 price. The 2011 Land Rover Freelander 2 is expected to come with a 2.2 L Common Rail turbo diesel engine with a variation in the power outputs. The TD4 SE variant is expected to generate a maximum power of 150 PS, while the SD4 HSE variant is likely to produce a peak power of 190 PS, mated with the standard 6 speed automatic gearbox, the torque output is likely to be around 400 Nm. With the revised cost, the Freelander2 TD 4 price is likely to be around Rs 36 lakhs, while the Freelander 2 SD4 price could be placed around Rs 41 lakhs.

Tata Motors as a part of its aggressive growth plan, envisages increasing the production capacity at its manufacturing plants from 300 units a month to 700 units. Tata Motors, with its diesel car line-up intends to benefit from the double whammy of increasing petrol prices leading to surge in demand for diesel cars combined with the MSI strike to ramp up its sales. The auto major finds the situation ideal to supply its diesel driven cars to make up for the increased wait time for Maruti cars. Maruti Swift apparently has a waiting period of four – five months at present.
