Maruti Suzuki is about to unleash its first compact SUV in the Indian market. Contrary to the tradition, the new Vitara Brezza has been built completely in India and will be officially revealed in the first week of February at Auto Expo. The car will be a global product and is being considered as a breakthrough product as it will be exported to markets abroad. This will also showcase the technological prowess of the largest passenger carmaker of the country.
Executive Director for Engineering CV Raman said "Vitara Brezza was given as a challenge to the Indian R&D team. It is engineered for global markets, and will be exported to related markets in South Asia." The car has been in development for over three and a half years. It has been developed on new SMC platform which will also underpin future products from Maruti.
Mr. Raman also said "Historically, we have contributed to vehicle development processes at Suzuki. But this is the first time that all decisions and judgements during the development of the product were taken in-house at Maruti. Suzuki did not participate... It was a tremendous learning experience and has enhanced significantly our capability and our role in global product development in SMC. "Brezza is an important milestone (in developing R&D capability). For the first time, except for two tests (the long-term endurance rust test and the wind-tunnel test - facilities for which are not available in India), the entire validation and testing were done utilising the crash lab and the tracks at Rohtak. It will help us introduce products and upgrades at a faster pace in the Indian market," Raman said.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza was recently teased in a video. Sharing the same engine options as in Swift, the car will lock horns with Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300 and upcoming Hyundai sub-compact SUV. Price is expected to fall in the bracket of INR 6-9 lacs.
