Mahindra’s plans to become a global leader is more evident with the pace the company is moving towards success. Back in 1991, Mahindra Group was apparently in rags , when the current Chairman of the Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra had taken over the leadership position. Since then the Mahindra Group has been involved in various acquisitions from agriculture to aerospace to stand in the present position. Mahindra and Mahindra had also bought the stakes in car manufacturing companies including utility vehicles manufacturer, SsangYong and the electric car manufacturer Reva.

Anand Mahindra as a Deputy Managing Director at 36 had been responsible for a major organisational restructuring to turn around the company into profits. In the past twenty years, the company has grown multi-folds gaining its insight into various fields including the two-wheeler production with Kinetic, Australia’s Gippsland in Aeronatics and into IT sector with Satyam Computers. Within a few years, the company has spread its roots through major acquisitions and the company’s turn over today is around $12 billion with a profit of $700 million.

The only sore point for Mahindra is its failure to penetrate into the U.S. market despite its multiple attempts. However, the Group has not lost its hope and envisages making an entry into the market introducing its commercial vehicles line-up. Apparently, the company is mulling over other options like using SsangYong nameplate to make its debut in the US market. Like most other winners, Mahindra had its setback when it lost with Tata Motors on Jaguar Land Rover. The automotive unit of Mahindra Group, Mahindra and Mahindra has the revenue of $10 billion surpassing the leaders in automobile manufacturing - Maruti Suzuki India and Tata Motors. The revenue made by this home-grown company is mostly accounted from the domestic sales as opposed to the revenue generated by Tata Motors, which makes its profits from overseas markets. This puts Mahindra in brighter light as it has further scope of development by gaining access into the overseas markets.

Nevertheless, the auto major has high plans with its latest Mahindra XUV 500, which is expected to be a global winner. Apart from its launch in India, South Africa, Chile and Sri Lanka, the exports to other markets like Nepal, Burma and China in Asia; Mahindra’s ambition to become a global leader does not seem to be miles away. Mahindra XUV 500, which is manufactured at the Chakan plant in Pune can be expected to bring in large profits for the company due to its localised production. With the success of Mahindra’s new SUV, the auto major will be able to steer away all its doubts of improving its global presence.
