Mahindra Thar 2020 Deliveries Now Underway

The wait is over for the lucky customers who were the earliest to order the new Thar

• Mahindra opened the order books for the new Thar on October 2.

• It has finally started customer deliveries for the second-gen Thar SUV.

• Second-gen Thar is priced from Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India).

• It is offered with petrol and diesel engines, each with the choice of manual or automatic transmission.

• The waiting period for a new Thar is already extending well into 2021 for new orders.

Mahindra opened the order books for its new Thar at the start of October and it has only now started customer deliveries. Considering the second-gen Thar has already accumulated well over 15,000 bookings, it would take a couple of months for Mahindra just to complete the orders placed in the first month. Meanwhile, waiting periods for new orders are already stretching into 2021 depending on the city. 

Understandably, the first customer model to be delivered was the #1 Thar that was auctioned for a winning bid of Rs 1.11 crore. The amount raised was donated to the Swades Foundation and the car was handed over to the highest bidder, Aakash Minda, based in New Delhi. He opted for the LX petrol-automatic variant with a convertible top.

The second-gen Thar gets petrol and diesel engines, both with manual and automatic transmissions. It also comes with the choice of a convertible soft top or a fixed hard top, depending on the variant. The Thar gets a 4x4 drivetrain as standard as well as removable door panels, water and dust-resistance IP54-rated dashboard, and a washable floor well.

Mahindra built the new Thar to be more than just a compromised adventure vehicle, something that would be easier to live with in general. As such, it now comes with features like cruise control, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with roof-mounted speakers, electric AC and front-facing rear seats. It is safer too with dual front airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a roll cage.

The Thar is currently available at introductory prices ranging from Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India). It has no direct rivals right now but it will be competing against the likes of the upcoming BS6 Force Gurkha and the India-spec Maruti Jimny.
