The Thar is currently priced between Rs 9.80 lakh and Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom)
-
It was launched on October 2, 2020.
-
This will be the first price hike since its launch and will apply to both petrol and diesel variants.
-
Mahindra offers the Thar with either a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol or a 2.2-litre diesel engine.
-
The Thar was recently awarded four stars in the Global NCAP crash tests.
Mahindra’s 2020 Thar was launched a couple of months ago at an introductory price, and the lifestyle SUV’s immense popularity helped it garner 20,000 bookings in the first month itself. While Mahindra has confirmed that the Thar has been sold out till May 2021, the prices of the SUV will be hiked from tomorrow.
Our dealer sources have informed us that the price hike will apply to both the petrol and diesel variants of the Thar, across its variant lineup. Mahindra could also incorporate forward-facing rear seats on the base AX Std and AX variants of the Thar after the lifestyle SUV secured a 4-star rating in the crash tests conducted by Global NCAP. This rating is, however, only applicable to the AX Opt and LX variants of the Thar as they come with forward-facing rear seats from the factory. The price hike that is expected to be announced tomorrow could include this change as well.
The new-gen Thar is offered with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol unit that puts out 150PS and 300Nm (320Nm with the automatic) and a 2.2-litre diesel engine that dishes out 130PS and 320Nm. Both the powertrains are offered with a 4x4 drivetrain and can be had with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
While the Thar’s off-roading capabilities are well known, it’s the newly added practical features that give it that modern touch. It is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that boasts of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.
Safety features have also been updated. It now comes with dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, and ABS with EBD as standard while the top-spec also gets ISOFIX child seat anchors, ESC with rollover mitigation, and a roll cage [also available in AX(O)].
The Thar is currently priced between Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), owing to its creature comforts. We expect it to be hiked anywhere in the range of Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000, depending on the variant. While its direct rival, the next-gen Force Gurkha, is yet to be launched, it presently competes with the likes of the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, and Renault Duster owing to a similar price tag.
