According to reports, the new-generation Thar will be launched in India sometime around October. It will coincide with the festive season in the country, a period when new car sales are generally at an all-time high.
The new Thar was initially supposed to be launched in the first half of 2020, however, the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic meant that work on the lifestyle offering had to be paused.
Mahindra’s Thar has always been known as a good off-roader but its bare-bones approach kept a lot of people from buying it. Even those who bought it could often be seen visiting the aftermarket to customise the Thar according to their requirements.

The new 2020 Thar looks to change that with a lot of the basic requirements being covered straight from the factory itself. The cabin won’t feel as bare-bones as before and there will even be front-facing seats for the first time in the back for two more passengers. Features such as auto AC, a touchscreen infotainment system, and steering-mounted audio controls will also be seen for the first time on the Thar.
These are not the only firsts for the Thar. Mahindra will also be introducing the Thar with a petrol engine and an automatic gearbox. While the specifics of the petrol engine haven’t been confirmed yet, we expect it to be a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit belting out 190PS. The diesel engine, on the other hand, will be a 2.2-litre unit making 140PS and 360Nm that is also present in the Scorpio.

Both engines are expected to get a 6-speed manual. While the diesel-automatic has already been spied, we believe the turbo-petrol motor could be offered with an automatic transmission as well. The Thar could be available in a 2WD configuration for those wanting to tour the urban jungle and in a 4WD configuration with a low-range gearbox for those looking to go touring in actual jungles.
The 2020 Thar will also get advanced safety features, compared to the outgoing model, such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, seatbelt reminder, disc brakes on all four wheels, and rear parking sensors. A rear parking camera is also likely on the higher variants. The headlamps are expected to gesture LED DRLs and we could also see LED elements in the tail lamps.
Mahindra, for the first time, will also be offering a hard-top variant of the Thar straight from the factory. All these new additions will definitely push the price up to somewhere around Rs 10 lakh for the base variant. The Thar’s only natural competitor will be the Force Gurkha.
