Mahindra To Ramp Up Production For New Thar To Meet Demand. 20,000 Orders Already Placed

Mega delivery drive planned to deliver more than 500 Thars across India this weekend

• Thar has raked up over 20,000 orders in its first month.

• Deliveries started on November 1 but Mahindra plans to hand over more than 500 new Thars by November 9.

• Mahindra will be increasing production capacity of the new Thar by 50 per cent in January 2021 to make 3,000 units a month.

• The waiting time for the Thar has already reached 7 months for some cities.

• New Thar is priced between Rs 9.80 lakh and Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Mahindra Thar has long been a desirable icon in the Indian automotive automotive community. Its recently launched second-generation model has further broadened its appeal with added practicality and it already recorded 20,000 orders in its first month on sale. In order to meet this demand, Mahindra has had to fast-track the process of increasing production for the 2020 Thar as delivery times are already stretching into the summer of 2021.

Order books for the new Thar opened on October 2 when Mahindra announced the prices but deliveries started only on November 1. As part of meeting the high demand and timing it just ahead of the Diwali festivities, Mahindra will be executing “mega deliveries” of over 500 units of the 2020 Thar across India on the November 7-8 weekend. 

Mahindra will be ramping up production for the 2020 Thar from 2000 units a month to 3000 units a month from January 2021 onwards. The waiting times for the new Thar are already stretching anywhere between 5 to 7 months, depending on the city. By ramping up production, Mahindra hopes to reduce waiting times for existing customers while also keeping up with fresh orders.

The 2020 Thar is offered with the choice of petrol and diesel engines, both with the option of a manual or an automatic transmission. It gets 4WD as standard with the choice of a manually convertible soft top or a fixed hard top. The list of modern-day comforts include cruise control, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, tyre pressure monitoring system, dual front airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchors in the forward-facing rear seats.

Mahindra is retailing the new Thar from Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It doesn’t have any direct rivals at this point but it will be competing against the BS6 Force Gurkha, which is due to launch soon, as well as the upcoming India-spec Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
