Mahindra has announced that it will be holding a press conference tomorrow, to make certain announcements pertaining to the XUV500 SUV. It is expected that this press conference will witness the introduction of an automatic transmission option for the XUV500. This development is expected because of the escalating competition, courtesy of Hyundai Creta. Mahindra will probably be introducing these automatic transmission options for both 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive variants of its SUV.
Chances are that the XUV500 will share the same 6-speed automatic unit that currently finds its application in the Scorpio. Additional factors motivating the Indian automaker include the success of newly launched Hyundai Creta and Mahindra’s very own TUV300, as the automatic variants of the TUV300 have accounted for about 50% sales of the compact SUV.
Under the hood, the XUV500 will probably remain mechanically identical to the standard variant, as no changes are expected to be introduced to the current powerplant to accommodate the automatic transmission unit. The car is expected to be powered by the same 2.2-litre engine, which produces 140bhp and 330Nm of torque. The automatic variants will probably cost around Rs. 50,000 more than the standard manual models. Even though the automatic variant XUV500 might be more expensive than the Creta, the car will aim to make up for the price difference with its extra 3rd-row seats.
