Mahindra & Mahindra, India's leading SUV maker is likely to unveil its flagship SUV, XUV 500 with a hybrid technology at the upcoming 2014 Auto Expo. This development indicates the company's capabilities and it will be a big step towards developing environmental friendly vehicles.
Mahindra's subsidiary the Reva is expected to play an important role in the production of hybrid XUV 500. Moreover, the company is also working on a new family of engines with the help of Ssangyong for its range of vehicles. The current diesel engine, which powers the XUV500, could combine to an electric motor. However, this setup might not return great fuel economy and Ssangyong is likely to help Mahindra to achieve the output. With this, Mahindra XUV 500 will be the country's first SUV to come with diesel hybrid powertrain.
Mahindra, reportedly, is set to work with German autoparts maker ZF for a manual transmission that blends the outputs of the diesel and electric motors. Interestingly, the company will also showcase the Automated Manual transmission, Verito Electric, Mahindra Formula E Car, which would participate at the FIA Formula E Series in September and Ssangyong Korando.
