The 2016 Auto Expo kicked off on a high note, courtesy Maruti Brezza. Maruti’s exhibition started at 0800 hrs and soon Vitara Brezza was brought onto stage. The vehicle, at very first glance, looked good and appealing. Later when we had a closer look, the car impressed us even further with its bold styling, theme layouts and well organised interiors.

Maruti Vitara Brezza

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the sub-compact urban SUV, has been conceptualised, designed and developed in India using a Suzuki global platform and engine. The development cost was Rs. 860 crores with a localization level of 98%. Mr. C. V. Raman, Executive Director, R&D, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) was the Chief Engineer leading the Vitara Brezza project. Here is a closer look at Vitara Brezza and all that it has on offer.

Looks

Maruti Vitara Brezza

For the first time in this segment, a car is available in three themes. Right from the showroom, customers can have a customised car to suit their style as Glamour, Urban and Sporty. Sporty, which was showcased in a yellow avatar, sports several added bits to make the car look different from its brothers. These bits include body graphics, added body cladding and sporty 5 unit, 15-spoke alloy wheels. The front grille is also highlighted by painting the mesh black.

Glamour and Urban variants share a lot of common bits but still manage to look different. The red Glamour theme sports an all-black floating roof whereas the blue Urban variant sports a two-tone floating roof. Alloys on both of these themes are the same, 5 set, 10 spoke units but the Glamour one gets one set of spokes dipped in the body paint. Other than these themes, the cars will also be available in different paint schemes as standard.

Already present in this segment, EcoSport looks sporty whereas TUV300 looks like a tough SUV. Maruti has managed to find a middle way and make Brezza look sporty and SUVish. The upward stance, 198mm ground clearance and a flat front give the car a strong SUV look, whereas the two-tone floating roof which slopes down gently towards the rear makes the car feel sporty. The car also features ‘Bull Horn’ shaped LED DRLs underlining the projector headlamps.

The car's insides features first in class instrument cluster with mood lights and a Smartplay infotainment system. Bits exclusive to the themes of the cars can also be spotted inside the cabin in form of body colour outlines and door panels. Interiors are well organised with steering wheel which has mounted controls and an all new instrument cluster, but does not feel exciting or new. They still maintain the old Maruti simplicity and design. All-in-all, the looks of the car are appealing and will definitely attract Indian buyers.

Engine

Maruti Vitara Brezza

Initially, Vitara Brezza will only be available with a diesel mill. This will be their tried and tested, 1.3-litre DDiS200 engine. This Fiat sourced engine has previously been employed by Maruti in S-Cross, Ertiga and Ciaz. In Ciaz and Ertiga, this engine comes coupled with Suzuki’s SHVS mild-hybrid technology. But as of now, there is no news of Brezza having the SHVS tech. So, mileage figures can be expected to resemble that of S-Cross. Brezza will feature 88bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and will return an overall fuel economy of around 23 kmpl.

Safety

Maruti Vitara Brezza

Vitara Brezza stands strong in the safety department. Not only does it feature airbags as an option in every variant, the car also has ABS with EBD as an option, right from the base variant. The body is also made from hi-tensile steel which incorporates Suzuki TECT body structure.

In a Nutshell

Maruti Vitara Brezza

Vitra Brezza has looks, style, presence, a reliable engine and a established brand. Although the interiors look a little pale, but the fact that it comes with a segment first touchscreen infotainment system, makes everything else feel less important. Bookings for the car have already begin so, interested buyers can book a spot. Overall, Vitara Brezza is a very strong product for the Indian market and if priced right, Brezza will not only overpower its segment, but will also eat into the sales of premium hatchbacks, sub-4 metre and C-segment sedans.
