Maruti’s compact SUV, the Brezza, has been going strong since its launch. The carmaker recorded 20,000 bookings within 20 days of its showcase at the Auto Expo 2016 and now it has emerged that the number has crossed the 40,000 mark.
The Brezza is powered by Maruti’s trusted 1.3-litre DDiS 200 diesel engine that powers the Ciaz and the S-Cross. The mill produces 89bhp of power with 200Nm of torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. We feel the power numbers could have been slightly better and maybe this is the reason Maruti is planning to launch a 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine later this year.
A petrol mill is not on offer, but its introduction is highly anticipated down the line. This will further help the carmaker boost the sales numbers.
The compact SUV by Maruti has carved out its own niche. Though its rivals always knew that Maruti would provide them tough competition in the market, Maruti managed to pull a fast one on them by pricing the base model below Rs. 7 lakh mark (ex-showroom, Delhi), compelling Ford to slash the prices of the EcoSport by more than Rs. 1 lakh within days of the Brezza’s launch. Despite that, Maruti’s offering has managed to remain ahead of its competitors (check our comparison). The EcoSport is able to sell 40,000 units per year and the TUV300 is likely to reach the 50,000 mark (sales numbers stand at 23,000 after six months). Mahindra has modest hopes from the NuvoSport and plans to produce 18,000 units of it annually. Observing the pace at which the Brezza is recording bookings, it is likely to outpace its rivals by a good margin. If Maruti introduces the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) in its offering, it will just enable it to harness this opportunity better.
