We know that when it comes to powerful performance, Mercedes-Benz is more than capable of checking all the boxes for a real enthusiast. But what about its potential customers who think even the best of efforts from Mercedes-Benz is half-hearted? Well, that’s where the AMG tag comes in and the Benz branding is tossed out. AMG is Mercedes’ in-house tuning division, very similar to BMW’s M-division. Clearly, the usual range of GLC wasn’t exciting enough for some and that’s why the German automaker has now unveiled the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and GLC 63 Coupe.
Both the GLC 63 avatars will be available in two variants - the standard 4MATIC+ and the S 4MATIC+. Powering these will be the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 that does duty in the AMG GT model range. In the standard 4MATIC+ spec, the engine is tuned to pump out 476PS of power and 650Nm of torque. In the S 4MATIC+ variant, however, the power figures are upped by 34PS/50Nm. The grunt is harnessed by the AMG-spec nine-speed MCT gearbox and transferred to the road via the 4MATIC+ permanent all-wheel-drive system.
Considering that these cars weigh nearly two tonnes, the end result is simply staggering. While the standard Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 4MATIC (SUV and Coupe) can complete the 0-100kmph sprint in 4 seconds, the extra power in the S 4MATIC+ variants (SUV and Coupe) helps in achieving the same in 3.8 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250kmph. Without the limiter though, both will surely nudge the 300kmph barrier.
The German carmaker currently sells eight models with the Mercedes-AMG badge in India. Only the GLA 45, G 63 and GLE 43 Coupe account for the SUVs and Coupe range. It is unlikely that the company will introduce the GLC 63 4MATIC+ models in India. That said, how cool would it be to see a 2000kg people-mover putting high performance sports cars to shame in a drag race?
