New Hyundai i20 Variant-wise Engine Options Revealed

The 1.2-litre petrol will come with either a 5-speed MT or CVT.

The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol will get either a 6-speed iMT or 7-speed DCT, no manual.

Hyundai will offer the diesel engine only on three variants of the new i20.
While the third-gen i20 is slated for a November 5 launch, Hyundai has now revealed the variant-wise engine options as it opens pre-launch bookings for the third-gen hatchback. Official pre-launch bookings are underway for a token amount of Rs 21,000. With the third-gen model, Hyundai has dropped the ‘Elite’ tag and it will once again be known as just i20.
Unlike the second-gen model that was offered in three variants towards the end of its lifecycle [Magna+, Sportz+ and Asta (O)], the new i20 will be available in four: Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta (O).
The new i20 will be offered with the same engines as the Venue. Here’s a look at the variant-wise engine and gearbox options:

A 5-speed MT gearbox will come as standard on all 1.2-litre petrol variants of the hatchback.

Hyundai will only be offering the petrol variants of the new i20 with an automatic gearbox option.

In case you wish to have a petrol variant with the CVT or 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission) clutchless manual gearbox, your only options are the second-to-base Sportz or the second-to-top Asta.

The second-to-top Asta petrol variant offers a maximum of four transmission options.

For those planning to buy the new i20 with the 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission), it will come with only the second-to-top Asta and the fully-loaded Asta (O) variants.

Hyundai won’t be offering the base-spec Magna petrol variant with an automatic gearbox.

The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine will not be offered with a proper manual transmission and will only get the option of an iMT (clutchless manual) or DCT, unlike the Venue.

The diesel engine, on the other hand, will be available only with a 6-speed MT.

Only the base-spec Magna, second-to-base Sportz and top-spec Asta (O) variants will get the diesel engine.

The new i20 will come in a total of eight exterior colour options including two dual-tone schemes. Hyundai will offer the dual-tone paint option on the Sportz, Asta and Asta (O) petrol variants while it will be available only on the Sportz and Asta (O) variants with the diesel engine. On the features front, it will come equipped with a sunroof, LED headlamps, semi-digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and connected car tech. Safety features will likely include six airbags, electronic stability control, and rear parking sensors.
Hyundai’s premium hatchback will continue to fight it out with the Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Baleno/Toyota Glanza and Tata Altroz. It is expected to be priced from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
