In case you’ve missed the build up to this moment, here’s a quick recap of why we’re excited for the new Thar
Update: The new Mahindra Thar has been unveiled and it gets a lot of new features for the first time ever. Read all about it here.
The Mahindra jeep is an icon of Indian automotive history. It is renowned for its tough looks, ruggedness and all-terrain abilities in a package that was offered at a very reasonable price. It only came to be known as the Thar in 2010 but its history stretches back decades. However, by sticking to only those things, the Mahindra jeep started to get left behind and was mainly appreciated by a smaller audience. But that’s what Mahindra is looking to change with the all-new Thar. It’s been spied testing many times but it will finally be unveiled this Independence Day on August 15. Here are 5 important facts you should know about the new Thar:
Gets a new platform for the first time
The new Thar will be underpinned by an all-new ladder-frame chassis. It has been developed to be compliant with the latest crash and safety norms while retaining its off-roader prowess. The official technical specifications are yet to be confirmed but we believe this is the FIRST time that Mahindra’s jeep will get a new platform in nearly seven decades. The previous models were built as evolutions with improvements over the original, a gradual process that can be traced back to the 1950s. So it’s about time the most iconic Mahindra SUV received fresh underpinnings.
Gets a petrol-engine for the first time
Unlike some carmakers, Mahindra has not ditched the diesel powertrain altogether. Instead, it is adding new petrol engines across its range. So, the new-age Thar will also get the choice of a petrol engine which is a first for the Mahindra jeep. It might even be available with the 4x4 drivetrain.

Draws many similarities with the Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler is the global standard for an all-rounder jeep. So, it's definitely a good thing that we’ve seen a fair number of similarities between the Thar test mules and the Wrangler. Features like detachable doors, and roof-mounted speakers are just some of the cool adventure-lifestyle elements we are expecting to see on the new Thar.
A Thar for everyone
One of the biggest changes spied inside the new Thar’s cabin is the modern dashboard, automatic gearbox option and forward facing rear seats. It was seen to be equipped with modern day comforts like automatic AC and a touchscreen infotainment system which means you can use it as a daily driver straight from the factory. Also, since Mahindra will be offering it with an automatic transmission for the first time ever, you won’t mind driving it in traffic either.
The rear front-facing seats instead of the usual jump seats showcase the Thar’s potential to be a family car as well. Mahindra may allow enthusiasts to opt for the more adventure-focussed layout as well, diversifying the uses of the new Thar.
Safer than ever
Since the new Thar will be compliant with the latest safety regulations, it will also come equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. On top of that, we’ve spied it with disc brakes on all four wheels and it could likely feature a reversing camera and ISOFIX child seat anchors too. All these feature additions to the new Thar make it safer than a Mahindra jeep has ever been.
