Aluminium metal is blessed with the virtue of being lightweight in nature. And Mercedes-Benz intends to take full advantage of it by building the car from scratch incorporating the aluminium metal instead. As much as 110 kg is expected to be slashed down from the overall weight due to the new aluminium makeover. Magnesium on the other hand is found to be a stone lighter than aluminium. The inclusion of the Magnesium metal is however restricted to the rear panel alone. Being another lightweight metal, it qualifies for serving dual purpose. Magnesium comes in effective use in the areas where high corrosion is expected, while on the other hand the new SL roadster now weighs 140 kg lighter than the outgoing model. However, steel is still retained at the key joints where durability is more important. The A-pillars require the support that only steel can provide where aluminium falls short in comparison.

Few car manufacturers might consider Carbon –fibre to develop a light weight car which is even lighter than aluminium. But where stability is concerned, Aluminium is found to fill the bill better. Car manufacturers are developing the lightweight cars with increased interest than ever before. The tendency of increased fuel efficiency shown by the light weight cars is nudging the auto makers to take a step in that direction. Moreover it results in low emissions as well. Maruti India and Mahindra and Mahindra are the two domestic car manufacturers who are keen on developing lighter weight cars for better future.
