Nissan India is looking at major expansion plans with yet another launch coming in form of a new MUV from the auto major. Nissan’s first MUV in India will be based on the Nissan NV 200, which is meant for other global markets including Europe. The prime competitor for the upcoming utility vehicle in the segment is the veteran in the segment, Toyota Innova. The consumers can feast their eyes upon the MUV for the first time in the 2012 Auto Expo, with a launch slated to take place in August 2012. Nissan is developing the new MUV in partnership with country's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, Ashok Leyland.

Moreover, the Japanese auto major has the diesel variant of Nissan Sunny launch lined-up for 2012, apart from which it plans to launch a low-cost hatchback during the year. To make enough room for the development of the upcoming models, the auto major has announced its plans to make an investment of Rs 4,500 crores to cover all the requirements for the enhancement of their production unit in Chennai. Nissan’s manufacturing unit at Oragadam, Chennai is shared by Renault to develop synergies, to roll out cars based on the same platform. Renault Pulse is such new car, to mark the beginning of their partnership, based on the Nissan Micra’s V platform.

The unit, which has the production capacity to roll out 200,000 units per annum is expected to be doubled by the end of next fiscal. On a positive note, Sunil Rekhi, the Chief Finance officer of Nissan India had informed that they are right on track and just few units short of their intended target sale of 40,000 units, to be attained by the end of FY 2011-2012. The number, which presently stands at 13,000 units is right enough to achieve 80% of the expected target.
