Peugeot to commence work on Sanand facility from November

The French automobile manufacturer, PSA Peugeot Citroen is making its re-entry in the country after 10 years. The auto major is presently undergoing the final steps of setting up the proposed plant in the emerging automobile hub of the country, Gujarat. The work is said to begin in full swing once the project initiation is done with the auspicious stone laying ceremony on November 3rd. Apparently, the plant design has already been approved by the industries department and all the other formalities like the training are being undertaken at France.

Peugeot Citroen is known to invest a sum of Rs 4000 crores in the upcoming plant that is going to be set up on the 600 acres of land in Sanand, Gujarat. Earlier last month, the top executives of the company held talks with the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi in regards to the proposed plant. Apart from Peugeot Citroen, the American auto manufacturer, Ford India has plans to set up its second manufacturing unit in Sanand. As per Ford India’s plans, the first car from the upcoming plant is expected to be rolled out in 2014. Ford India currently has a manufacturing unit in Chennai. The new Ford India’s manufacturing plant in Sanand is expected to create opportunities for 5000 people, which will have the production capacity of manufacturing 240,000 units and 270,000 engines. The American auto major is believed to invest a sum of $ 1 billion in the proposed plant. The new upcoming plant in Gujarat is a part of Ford India’s aggressive growth plans in the country. Tata Motors also has recently set up its new plant in Sanand for developing its small car Tata Nano.

The French auto brand expects to make its debut in the country by introducing its sedan Peugeot 508 in 2012 Indian Auto Expo to be held in New Delhi. As the rumours has it, the Peugeot Citroen will be imported into the country through the CBU route initially, however commence the assembling of the vehicles once its upcoming plant in Sanand is up and functioning. Peugeot is apparently mulling to set up an engine manufacturing unit as well to increase the localisation of its products in India to 70-80%.
