PSA Peugeot Citroen zeroes in on Gujarat for the manufacturing facility

It is time for Gujarat to get Glocal (global+local) as hot shots from automobile sector are vying to get a chunk of land for setting up there plants in the state. After the much talked about 1,100 acre Tata Motors and Ford Motors's plant in Sanand, 40 km away form Ahmedabad, its the French automajor PSA Peugeot Citroen which is likely to be alloted land to set up a 4,000 crore facility here. A senior official from Chief Minister's Office intimated that a delegation including Gregoire Olivier, CEO (Asian operations) and Frederic Fabre, Managing Director of PSA Peugeot Citroen (India project), will be coming to Ahmedabad on Thursday to sign a MoU for the project. The world no. 6 car maker, Peugeot, selected the location after doing a recce in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, he added.
Sanand being located on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, an ambitious project of Gujarat Government, is turning out to be a key location for industrial giants because of its excellent connectivity of roads, rail and major ports in Gujarat like Kandla and Mundra. The town is also famous because of the shifting of Tata Nano's plant from Singur in West Bengal to Sanand amid huge controversy between Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors and the West Bengal's government. The town witnessed another celebration when World no. 4 auto maker Ford Motor got an approval in July this year, to start a 400 acre plant. Peugeot would be the third auto company to show up in Sanand and is likely to be allotted land in the neighbourhood of Ford Motor's 5,000 crore upcoming facility. But the list is non-ending, Maruti Suzuki India, Bajaj Auto and Hero Honda (now Hero Motocorp) are some of the big names in automobile sector which are wired up to start their units in Gujarat.
The famous bike and car manufacturer, Peugeot is eyeing on the non-ending craze among Indians for luxury cars and is expected to roll out about 3 lakh mid-sized sedans annually from this new facility. Peugeot earlier had a joint venture Peugeot PAL India with an erstwhile Premier family but pulled out from the partnership ten years ago.
