The Renault Kiger has arrived in the sub-compact SUV segment with an introductory price tag of Rs 5.45 lakh to Rs 9.55 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It follows closely on the heels of its sibling, the Nissan Magnite, which is priced rather closely with the same powertrain options. But the Kiger bears a very different design from the Magnite with minor but important differences in its feature list. Here’s a look at how the two models compare in terms of the features they offer, variant-for-variant. Do note that this is a comparison based on what the two SUVs bring to the table on paper and does not take into account the drive and handling experience. A more detailed comparison will follow once we have driven both cars together.

Verdict: The base variants of the Kiger and Magnite are closely priced and are taking different approaches to get your attention. The Kiger is offering more attention-grabbing elements like LED DRLs and turn indicators on the ORVM. However, if you are looking for a more family-friendly and practical option, the Nissan Magnite offers helpful features. Rear occupants will appreciate the added safety of adjustable headrests and the convenience of power windows; on the Kiger rear passengers get an extra 12V charging socket to charge their devices on the go. On the Magnite, the driver also gets safety features such as the rear wiper, washer and defogger to make life on the road easier on rainy and cold days. So, despite the slightly higher price tag, the Magnite XE is the more complete car at this price point.

Verdict: The exclusive features list on the Kiger in the RXL is a bit short - it gets a dash of style with DRLs and rear aircon vents. The latter will surely make the life of rear occupants more pleasing. However, the Magnite XL, despite being cheaper (non turbo variant), offers even more with automatic climate control. Like the Kiger, the Nissan, too, gets powered adjustable mirrors but with the power-folding function. The double-din music system is paired with 6 speakers as opposed to the Kiger's four speaker setup. The 1.0-litre turbo debuts on both these variants, but the Nissan combines it with more safety aids such as ESC, VDC, Hill Hold Assist and ISOFIX child seat anchors for a small premium. This makes the Turbo Magnite XL's safety and VFM quotient higher.

Verdict: These variants are taking very different approaches when it comes to delivering value for money. The Kiger adds two side airbags, taking the total airbag count to four! The Magnite, though, is adding a lot of features which make the XV an almost complete variant. While the Kiger gets styled steel wheels on the RXT, the Magnite gets alloy wheels. And to up the head turning factor, the Magnite also gets LED fog lamps. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment screens with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay debut on both cars on this variant, but the Magnite goes one step further by offering wireless connectivity too! So, both these variants have their set of strengths and picking one of the two will depend on individual preferences and what features you value more. But, you’ll have to shell out a fair bit more for the turbo-petrol Magnite’s additional features.

Verdict:

These are the best-equipped variants of both the Kiger and Magnite and they are doing their best to woo you.

As seen in all the turbo variants above, the Magnite XV Premium Turbo is still the more compelling option as it has added safety features such as stability control and hill start assist along with more wow features too, though, once again, for a slight premium.

However, things are not so straightforward with the more affordable non-turbo versions. Here, the Kiger RXZ offers a little extra safety with two additional airbags and even a PM2.5 air filter for a more caring attitude. But it also splashes in excitement with ambient lighting, two extra speakers and drive modes that promise to make the Kiger more flexible. The Magnite XV Premium does try to wow you with its premium features such as a 360-degree camera and cruise control which gives it a feature-strong approach whereas the Kiger takes a "safe but exciting" stance.

Verdict: The top-spec Kiger RXZ AMT is understandably better equipped than the Magnite Turbo XL CVT as the former is a top-spec variant and its price clashes with the entry-level Magnite Turbo CVT. The Renault SUV gets LED headlamps and 16-inch alloys as opposed to steel wheels on the Magnite Turbo XL CVT. The Renault driver also gets a height adjustable seat, which should be useful for shorter drivers. Other useful features include rear AC vents, rear parking camera, PM 2.5 clear air filter, and front and rear armrest. The entertainment quotient is also better in the Kiger RXZ AMT with a 8-inch touchscreen unit with 8 speakers compared to the Magnite’s 2-din audio system with 6 speakers. The Magnite gets 2 airbags less than the Renault but it makes up for that loss with other active safety features such as ESP, Hill launch assist and traction control.

It is important to note that the Nissan CVT SUV offers a significantly more powerful engine than the Renault one in this comparison. Moreover, CVTs are known to offer seamless shifts in comparison to AMTs. Having said that, we’ll reserve the judgement on the drive experience once we have tested and compared the two vehicles side by side.
