Renault Nissan India to increase production of cars

The French car maker and the Japanese car giant Nissan plans to expand production at their Oragadam plant in Chennai. Initially, a third shift will be added to the existing two shifts at the plant. With the start of the third shift, the car production capacity of the plant will reach two lakh units. Notably, Renault and Nissan both own this unit since 2008 when they decided to setup it by investing Rs 4,500 crore. Currently, the unit manufactures Nissan Micra wholly and Renault Fluence in the completely knocked down mode. Upcoming Nissan Sunny luxury sedan will also be rolled out of this facility.

Renault India Managing Director Marc Nassif on Wednesday reportedly told reporters that the Renault Nissan India is soon going to increase production in the coming weeks and as the first step the third shift will be introduced. The capacity would be further increased to four lakh units, he added. Sources said that the Oragadam plant is of a flexible type and is capable of producing both Renault cars and Nissan cars in India on a single production line. Marc Nassif spoke to reporters on the occasion of the launch of Renault Fluence in Chennai which is the 13th showroom of the French automaker in India and the first in Tamil Nadu. Reports suggest that Renault is soon going to open their next showroom in Pune.

After the recent launch of its brand and its first offering Renault Fluence, Renault is on an aggressive foot to establish itself in India. Notably, Renault had a tie up with Mahindra with which it launched Mahindra Logan in India, but the tie up could not continue and in April this year Renault and Mahindra severed. As part of the current expansion spree, Renault will be launching four models including Renault Koleos SUV in the next 5 months in India. One of these cars will be manufactured at the Chennai facility.

The Renault Fluence price in Chennai is kept at Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom Chennai) for the diesel version while the petrol version has been priced at Rs14.40 lakh (ex-showroom Chennai).
