Reva to roll out electric vehicle based on M&M platform

Mahindra and Mahindra has plans to launch its new electric vehicle in the next 18 months based on the existing model in collaboration with Reva electric vehicle company. As informed by Chetan Maini, the Chief of Technology and Strategy of Reva, the technology fitments for the upcoming electric vehicle is already done and is currently in the testing phase. However, Maini hasn't revealed any details about the model on which the electric vehicle is going to be rolled out. M&M had made its intentions well-known about rolling out its electrically operated Mahindra Scorpio, after which the company hopes to introduce the electric fuel option on its other models as well.

M&M had formed a joint-venture with Reva in 2010, acquiring a majority share in Reva. Reva electric car is hoped to be offered in 50 M&M outlets by this year end, which is later expected to reach 100 showrooms by 2012 end. As of now, Reva electric car is offered in 24 M&M outlets and 2 Reva's own outlets. According to Maini, Reva hopes to introduce the upcoming electric car in the international market as well through the Mahindra's overseas dealerships. The company, which will initially offer the electric car in the NXR model next year, also plans to offer the NXD model in future.

In a step towards increasing the company's production from 3000 units to 30,000 units, the second manufacturing plant in Bangalore is also in the pipe-line. M&M, which is also a parent company of Korean auto brand Ssangyong, envisage launching a Ssangyong SUV by 2012, following the launch of Mahindra XUV500 SUV. Apart from the upcoming launches, the Indian auto major is currently involved in the production of new versions of Mahindra Scorpio, Mahindra Bolero and Mahindra Xylo in the SUV segment and Mahindra Verito in the sedan segment.
