The British luxury carmaker Rolls Royce is making plans to open an R&D center in Bangalore. Paul Stein, Chief Scientific Officer at Rolls-Royce believes that for out of box thinking, company has to look for the talent outside the home country UK. The company is looking for the next stage of globalisation, growth and innovation and in that India holds a key position.
The automaker is already taking the service from software company Tata Consultancy Services and QuEST- Bangalore-based aerospace company. Rolls Royce also has a joint venture with Hindustan Aeronautics. On asking about Rolls Royce strategy in India, Stein said, it will take some time, "We don't want to eat the elephant in one gobble. We are doing one bite at a time."
Stein said "We did not want a cheaper solution, but look, if they can solve problems in a different way and we got an amazing response."
Stein joined Rolls-Royce in 2010 and is responsible for the new scientific developments in the company. “Innovation does not happen by accident," said Stein. "It happens because you stimulate the flow of innovation inside the company."
Prior to his association with Rolls- Royce, Stein was the Director General of Science and Technology at the UK ministry of defence and later he founded a computer gaming company. He has also worked with big companies like Philips, Siemens and Thales. When he was at Roke Manor Research, he played a major role in developing Hawk-Eye technology. "I spotted it, invested in and spanned it out and it has turned into a great success," said Stein.
Stein also said that he and his team is closely watching Elon Musk Tesla Motor’s CEO and PayPal’s co founder. “Elon Musk is fantastic, the world needs him," said Stein. "And the lessons big companies like us learn from him is the art of the possible."
