Skoda commences production of Citigo hatchback

The production of the small car from Skoda Motors is reported to have commenced according the latest reports. The Czech auto manufacturer unveiled the Skoda Citigo during the 2011 Frankfurt Motor show recently. With the evergreen demand for the small cars in India, the launch of Skoda Citigo is more than a possibility. The new car is being manufactured on the same platform as Volkswagen Up!, where the German auto manufacturer and its subsidiary are sharing the same platform for both the upcoming cars. The small car is supposed to position itself in the B-segment cars with the Skoda’s well-acknowledged superior quality and built. Skoda Citigo price is likely to be placed a notch lower than its cousin, Volkswagen UP!.

Skoda Citigo is expected to be launched in both the three-door and the four-door variant. Volkswagen Up! and Skoda Citigo are expected to be introduced in the Indian car market in early 2012. As for the engine specifications, the Skoda Citigo is expected to be powered by the same Volkswagen Up!’s 1.0L 3-cylinder petrol engine tuned to generate two variations in the peak power output. The petrol engine is expected to be well-mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox to churn out a 60 Bhp and 75 Bhp power. An electric version of the hatchback is also anticipated. Skoda India intends to drive volumes with their new hatchback in India with Indian consumers penchant for small cars.

While Volkswagen Up! and Skoda Citigo are two hatchbacks to be introduced on a common platform, the Czech auto manufacturer is believed to introduce a new sedan Skoda Rapid on the likes of Volkswagen Vento. Skoda Rapid is said to house the same 1.6 L petrol and the diesel engine of Volkswagen Vento, however, the only variation could be the introduction of the automatic gearbox for Skoda Rapid’s diesel variant as well. The Skoda Rapid is expected to hit the Indian roads by November, this year with a starting price of under Rs 7 lakhs.
