This is time when SUV's and other Luxury car makers were alert as the Environment minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday turned his head towards sub-optimal fuel efficient cars in India. Jairam made a statement on the sports utility vehicles (SUV's) saying that it is absolutely wrong to drive such vehicles in this country as it is utilizing the resources at a huge ratio.
He was in a view to bring necessary changes in the fiscal policy of India to discourage the use of SUVs and heavy cars in particular. Mr. Ramesh took a stand on both carbon emissions and diesel subsidies. At present government has estimated a subsidy of Rs. 51,000 crore for LPG, Kerosene and diesel. Subsidy in Diesel cannot be ignored as it is being used by farmers for irrigation but here in case of these cars we find not so deserving beneficiaries.
The major purpose behind abhorring these low fuel efficient car was to bring this huge issue in front of the masses. Moreover Mr. Ramesh was found stressing the low-carbon transport in India. This is rather a good initiative from Environment's perspective but certainly not a very good news for the manufacturers of these cars.
Mr. Ramesh is much in news these days because of his rising political clout. This man has managed to carve out his image out of big discourse round the nation. On many issues, people have seen this Congress minister taking politically controversial stands.
He was a point of discussion at the time he denied many major mine projects in Orrisa, Niyamgiri etc. These are some of the exceptional stands taken by the political brain. This man has shown his talent of leadership by taking the Environment concern to levels it rightly deserve. By his grace now Indian businessman and politicians at least don't ignore the environment variable while making decisions. He has managed to bring good amount of change in not much time.
The SUV segment is all blooming in India with some popular SUVs like Mahindra Scorpio, Tata Aria and the upcomin Skoda Yeti, that is all set to dazzle the Indian buyers on 15th November with the launch scheduled in the state capital New Delhi. The manufacturers take on the minister's quote is yet to be witnessed.
