Tata has given us a name and a teaser for its latest SUV. Here’s what we know about it so far

Tata has teased the silhouette of its upcoming 7-seater SUV based on the Harrier and has also revealed that it will be called the Gravitas. However, the Gravitas is not as mysterious as the teaser might suggest. Here are five things you should know about the Tata Gravitas:

1)  It’s a 7-seater Harrier and we’ve already seen it

The Gravitas is the 7-seater version of the 5-seater Tata Harrier mid-size SUV, so it’ll be built on the same OMEGA ARC platform. Tata has already given us a preview of the SUV in the form of the Buzzard, which made its debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in March this year. The Gravitas, once launched, will become Tata’s flagship model in India.

2) It won’t look exactly like the Harrier

The Gravitas will be bigger than the Harrier to accommodate the extra row of seats. While the styling and design language will be quite similar to the Harrier at the front, the taller rear end will look a lot different from the 5-seater SUV.

The Gravitas is expected to look nearly identical to the Buzzard, the blue SUV you see in the pictures.

3) It will get the same engine as the Harrier, and will be a diesel-only SUV at launch

The Gravitas will be powered by the same Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine as the Harrier. However, it will be offered in a more powerful state of tune than the Harrier. We expect it to be offered in the same tune as the BS6 Jeep Compass - 170PS and 350Nm. This power unit will be mated to a 6-speed manual as standard while there could be a 6-speed automatic sourced from Hyundai as an option too.

Tata has also been working on a new petrol engine for the Harrier and is expected to be introduced as early as 2020. This should be offered on the Gravitas as well.

4) It’ll be feature loaded

Since the Tata Gravitas will be the carmaker’s flagship model, it will be well equipped. It will likely carry forward many of the features seen in the Harrier such as the semi-digital instrument cluster, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, six airbags and terrain response modes. Additionally, the Gravitas could also get larger alloys and a panoramic sunroof.

5) It’ll launch in February 2020

The Tata Gravitas should make its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo and go on sale soon after. It will likely have a starting price of around Rs 15 lakh and it will compete against the likes of the Mahindra XUV500 and the upcoming 7-seater version of the MG Hector as well.
