The Harrier has been a key model in Tata’s recent years as it marked the carmaker’s entry into the premium SUV segment, while also being the first Tata offering to be underpinned by a Land Rover platform

 Tata Harrier

Ever since Tata showcased the Harrier as a concept (H5X) at the 2018 Auto Expo, the buzz around the SUV has refused to cease, especially after its market introduction in 2019. Having been an instant success, the SUV has quickly went on to become one of the frontrunners in Tata’s SUV game.

On the backdrop of the carmaker recently celebrating the SUV’s 1-lakh-sales journey, here’re some of the factors that have contributed to the Harrier’s popularity:

 Entry Into Bigger Segments

 Tata Harrier

The Harrier was certainly a game-changing product for the carmaker as it marked Tata’s entrance into higher and more modern SUV segments. While the compact and midsize segments were growing in competition, Tata introduced a High SUV in the form of the Harrier that was not only an aspirational purchase for customers but also a flagship in its SUV lineup.

The Harrier is based on the Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced (OMEGA) Architecture (Arc) platform, which is derived from Land Rover’s D8 Architecture. A few traits of the OMEGA ARC are: exemplary driving dynamics in both urban and rough road environments, robust build quality and reliability, quiet and refined in-cabin experience, equipped for absolute safety, and efficiently optimised for strength.

A Spirited Diesel Unit Under The Hood

Tata’s successful run with the Harrier has a very strong footing in its spirited performance which is derived from the 2-litre diesel engine which produces 170 Hp and 350Nm. The engine is tuned to offer spirited and refined performance both in CIty and off-roads. The carmaker has teamed it with a 6-speed manual as standard while a 6-speed automatic transmission is optional.

 Up With The Times

Ever since the Harrier went on sale, Tata has ensured that the SUV remains updated and in sync with the changing times. One of the initial revisions came in early 2020 (right around the time of the expo) when the carmaker introduced an automatic gearbox (6-speed torque converter unit) on the Harrier, along with some other upgrades including a Segment-Best Majestic Panoramic sunroof. Other thoughtful additions included an auto-dimming IRVM and a 6-way power-adjustable driver seat.

 Multiple Editions, Plethora Of Features

Over the course of its 4-year journey, the Harrier has been given plenty of updates, including a series of special editions such as “Dark”, “Camo”, “Kaziranga”, “Jet”; and more recently, the “Red Dark.” The “Dark” and “Red Dark” have become the trend-setters in their own ways as other carmakers followed suit later.

With its most recent special edition, Tata gave vital upgrades to the SUV, which included the new and bigger 10.25-inch Harman Touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, 360-degree Surround view camera and 6-way powered driver seat with memory function. Safety gets a level up through the offering of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with 10 key features.

Moreover, the Harrier is set to receive a midlife update that will elevate its striking design while also taking its features game a few notches higher.
