Let’s see how much extra will you have to shell out for the Tiago EV as opposed to buying the CNG version, and how different their daily running costs are
Tata’s most affordable EV, the all-electric Tiago, has been launched and is sold in four trims: XE, XT, XZ+, and XZ+ Tech Lux. The Tiago is now the only hatchback in India which is available in three powertrain versions: all-electric, internal combustion engine (ICE), and CNG.
While we have already covered the EV vs petrol-auto comparison of on-road and running costs, in this story let’s put the Tiago EV head-to-head with its CNG counterpart. Do note that the CNG variants get only the five-speed manual gearbox, while the EV is only available with an automatic transmission.
First, let’s see their on-road prices:

Takeaways
-
Tata offers a CNG kit right from the base-spec XE trim of the standard Tiago. When prices of the base-spec XE trims of the all-electric Tiago and the Tiago CNG are compared, the former’s starting price is more than that of the latter by over Rs 1.5 lakh.
-
The XT trim of the EV is pricier by more than Rs 1.5 lakh compared to that of the Tiago CNG, while the premium goes over Rs 2.5 lakh when their respective XZ+ trims are considered.
The Tiago EV gets two battery pack options: 19.2kWh (250km) and 24kWh (315km). It also supports DC fast charging, which juices up its battery pack from 10 to 80 per cent in 57 minutes. Around three and a half hours will be required for the same when a 7.2kW AC charger is used, while the smaller battery takes less time, around 2.6 hours.

Note: We have only considered the public-charging costs for this comparison. The home-charging rates are much lower than the former, hence the running costs in those scenarios will also be much lesser for the Tiago EV.
Now, we have calculated the daily running costs of both models based on Pune prices (fast charging CCS-2 Tata Power station) and claimed efficiencies. So, the Tiago EV’s per kilometre running cost is around Rs 1.4 , as opposed to Rs 3.4 of its CNG counterpart.
