It is probably a shameful moment for any car maker, when its cars are in the news for its faulty design and engine. Tata Nano’s fire catching incident is not new but recently three cases came into limelight in the same week. This kicked Tata Motors’ engineers who are now engaged in mending Electronic Control Unit of Tata Nano. Tata Motors Limited has been calling up existing Tata Nano owners to update the ECU software of the car.

The software update will prevent the starter motor from engaging once the engine is running. This will result in lesser wear and tear and hence the chances of starter motor failure on the Nano will cripple down. Tata Motors has incorporated this feature on the Tata Nano through a software upgrade called Patch S18/19. The updation of ECU software is now being undertaken by many car makers. Car makers are foraying into such fixation because of the reported engine problems cropping up.
Generally when one starts his car, it happens that he keeps the ignition key in the engine starting/cranking position even if the engine has started. Many a times, this happens inadvertently leading to the starter motor getting worn out. Sometimes even the driver may unintentionally rotate the ignition key to starting/cranking position even when the engine is running. This is a wrong way to operate the car.

So next time when you start your Tata Nano, let it idle for a minute or two. Then turn the ignition key to engine starting/cranking position. If you can hear the starter motor engage, then you need to visit Tata authorized service center to get the software upgrade for the Nano, which will take just 5 minutes to install. However there is no reason to worry if your Nano’s starter motor does not engage when the engine is already running. Meanwhile, Tata Motors has already begun contacting Tata Nano owners whose cars require this software upgrade. Hopefully this can reduce the chances of Tata Nano bidding farewell.
