The next generation Volvo XC90 has been spied in Denmark in a heavily camouflaged covering; the Scandinavian automaker's flagship SUV is due for replacement for long. The nex-gen XC90 is likely to enter production early next year; Expect the SUV to enter India in mid 2015. The new XC90 will be based on the Volvo's concept XC coupe showcased at the Detroit Motor Show this year in January; it will be the first outcome after the new owners Geely Automobiles. The upcoming SUV is based on the company's new Scalable Product Architecture which helped the new vehicle to shed several kilos.
Speaking of the design, the new vehicle will receive radical changes inside out. The XC90 will boast Volvo's new design language first seen on the concept coupe shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and indeed, in the concept XC coupe resembles the concept form. “The Volvo Concept Coupé show what you can expect from our new architecture: the confident stance, the proportions and the most prominent design signatures. Even though the all-new XC90 is a different type of car, you will recognise the connection instantly,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group
The new design philosophy is mix bag of modernism and legendary Scandinavian curves – as a result it makes Volvo cars look more flamboyant and captivating. Some of the characteristics of the new design language including the horizontal headlamp cluster with sideways T shaped day-time-LED-strip that separates it, large grille with typical Volvo logo, big meaty air diffuser. About the rear, they just cannot change the typical Volvo taillight layout, well they should not! The tail lamp looks classy in every Volvo vehicle, lot of buyers like that.
Mechanically, the SUV will feature the new super efficient Drive-E range four cylinder engines. Volvo India offers the current XC90 with a diesel heart only, the 2.4 liter 5-cylinder unit churns out 187PS of power while a torque of 400Nm. After loosing overall weight, the new four cylinder low emission diesel power plant will be enough to pull the seven seater XC90. Although the engine specifications of the new SUV are not known at the moment but the new Drive-E clan churns out power from 120bhp and goes all the way up to 230bhp.
As always Volvo cars are way ahead when it comes to safety! The new XC90 will features blistering list of safety equipments. To name a few, the SUV will boost pedestrian detection in darkness, which also include vehicles and cyclists, Road Edge - Barrier Detection and Adaptive Cruise Control both With Steer Assist and Animal Detection.
