True to its word to increase its market share in the SUV segment to 50% by 2012, Maruti India is making every effort in this direction. The new Maruti Ertiga MPV seems to be a deviation in every aspect from its current SUV line-up. However, one should agree that Maruti India has got the Maruti Ertiga price quite right, in the range of Rs 6.5 lakh – Rs 9 lakh to have an upper hand against its closest competitors Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo in the market. Another big plus for the MPV could be sharing the Ritz platform which rewards the MPV with an easy handling like a car rather than like propelling a big bulky structure on wheels.

The 1.3 L Fiat’s diesel engine is a big charmer with the efficiency to deliver a peak power of 90 Bhp and 200 Nm peak torque like in the SX4 sedan. The 1.4 L petrol engine is something new from Maruti India especially for the Ertiga MPV to pump out a top power of 94 Bhp and 130 nm of peak torque. However, Maruti Suzuki India did not pull out this MPV from its bag of tricks. It is the same RIII concept showcased at the 2010 Auto Expo. Just imagine the time taken to convert it from the concept to a reality. Honestly speaking, there is absolutely no shred of resemblance between the Concept showcased back then and the Ertiga MPV as it comes closer to reality.

Maruti India might have dropped all the frills what was apt at that time to get the costs right for the Indian car market. Nevertheless, the classy attractive design coupled with the high performing engines will be enough to garner the sales for the car manufacturer which Maruti Gypsy did not manage. The Gypsy was more of a perfect off-roader ideal for the dusty rural roads than for the urban usage and Maruti Grand Vitara is just the opposite. The Grand Vitara was unable to contain its share of consumers more because of it outdated looks which played along with its high price tag and it literally drowned against the competition. Maruti India has around 10 models up on its sleeve in all for the 2012 Auto Expo.
