Toyota India to hire 1,500 employees by 2012

Toyota Motors is at its heels to expand its production capacity to 1 lakh units by 2014. At present, the company is expanding the combined capacity of its two facilities in Bangalore to 2.1 lakh units from 1.5 lakh units. The Japanese car giant Toyota Motors which is working hand-in-hand with India based Kirloskar Group, is investing Rs 1,650 crore to bring this in effect. The firm invested Rs 3,200 crore to set up its second manufacturing facility in Bangalore, with an initial installed capacity of 70,000 units per annum, which is now being expanded to 1.2 lakh units annually.

Shekar Viswanathan, Deputy Managing Director (Commercial) of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) told the reporters on sidelines of annual summit of Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) that the company would be hiring 1,500 permanent employees by 2012 to meet the expansion needs of the firm. In addition to this the company would be hiring people who can work on contract basis also. The company will hire people across various disciplines as the expansion program gradually unfolds. TKM currently employs around 4,500 employees at its two facilities in Bangalore, of which 70% are permanent employees. Subsequently, the capacity at the first plant will be raised to 1lakh units from 90,000 units, while the output at the second plant will be increased to 2,10,000 units from 1,20,000 units.

The diesel variant of Toyota Etios and Toyota Etios Liva is on the brink of launch. While the hatchback Liva (petrol) was rolled out in June this year, petrol version of the sedan Etios was introduced last year. Since then, the company has sold about 30,000 units of the two models. Within the new plan, the company will increase the production volume of both the cars to 6,800-7,000 units per month by October, as the diesel variants arrive. At present, the company manufactures 6,000 units of the Etios and Liva every month. Toyota India has also announced that it will go for heavy localisation of components by 2014. The company envisages to invest Rs 500 crore set up an engine plant and expand its transmissions capacity that can meet the demands for Toyota Etios and Toyota Etios Liva.
