Toyota’s entry into the sub-4 metre SUV segment means buyers will now have a choice between seven cars

Update (23/09/2020): Toyota has launched the Urban Cruiser with prices beginning from Rs 8.40 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Read more about it here.

  • Urban Cruiser is a rebadged Maruti Vitara Brezza.

  • Front-end is redesigned and draws inspiration from the Toyota Fortuner.

  • A 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 105PS/138Nm is the only option.

  • You can choose between a 5-speed manual and 4-speed auto.

  • The automatic variants will also have a mild-hybrid system.

  • It will rival the Sonet, Venue, Vitara Brezza, EcoSport, XUV300 and Nexon.

  • Urban Cruiser will be priced between Rs 7.99 lakh and Rs 11.65 lakh (ex-showroom India).

Toyota will be launching its iteration of a sub-4 metre SUV, the Urban Cruiser, on September 23, 2020. It is a rebadged version of the Maruti Vitara Brezza as part of the Suzuki-Toyota JV and will rival the likes of Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue and the SUV it is based on, the Vitara Brezza.

The Urban Cruiser’s front-end has been redesigned to differentiate its styling from the Vitara Brezza. It now looks like one of Toyota’s bread and butter models, the Toyota Fortuner. The horizontal slats in the front grille flanked by the vertically-slanted chrome inserts not only mirror the Fortuner, but also give the Urban Cruiser an imposing look.

Apart from the front profile, the rest of the design including the alloy wheels is identical to the Brezza. Toyota has also tweaked the interior a bit. The Urban Cruiser makes use of a dark brown upholster which can be seen on the seats and the doors.

Underneath the bonnet, the Urban Cruiser will have the same setup as the Vitara Brezza. A 1.5-litre petrol engine, which makes 105PS/138Nm, is paired to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The automatic transmission version will also receive a mild-hybrid system, just like the Vitara Brezza.

The Urban Cruiser will be offered in three variants: Mid, High and Premium. These are based on the VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ variants of the Vitara Brezza, respectively, and will have an identical feature list as the Brezza’s corresponding variants. All three variants can be had with a manual or automatic transmission. The Urban Cruiser will be offered with features such as dual-chamber LED projector headlamps, LED fog lamps, LED tail lamps, auto AC, cruise control, automatic headlamps and a touchscreen.

There’s only a limited amount of time left for those looking to cash in on the free 2-year maintenance package from Toyota, now that the Urban Cruiser’s launch date has been revealed. You can read more about the offer here.

According to our calculations, the Urban Cruiser should be priced between Rs 7.99 lakh and Rs 11.65 lakh (ex-showroom India). Apart from the Sonet, Venue and Vitara Brezza, it will also take on the Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300 and Tata Nexon.
