Toyota will take Suzuki’s help in developing this MPV and it will supply it to Suzuki as well

  • The companies have announced development of C-segment MPV

  • Will be positioned between Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova Crysta

  • Will be developed keeping the Indian market in mind

Toyota and Suzuki have announced that they will jointly develop a new C-segment MPV for the Indian car market. The official statement reads that Toyota will develop the MPV by drawing upon Suzuki’s expertise in developing vehicles in India.

While the carmakers have announced the development plan, there is no confirmation about the launch timeline of the vehicle yet. However, the new MPV will be launched as a Toyota vehicle first and will be supplied to Suzuki later.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Being a C-segment offering should mean that it will be slotted in between the Ertiga and the Innova Crysta. That’s the space which is currently occupied by the Mahindra Marazzo. Here’s a look at the dimensions of these three MPVs.

Price-wise too, the Mahindra Marazzo is positioned between the Ertiga and the Innova Crysta. While the Ertiga is priced from Rs 7.44 lakh to Rs 10.90 lakh, the Innova Crysta starts from Rs 14.83 lakh. The Marazzo, on the other hand, is priced from Rs 9.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 14.38 lakh (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).

Mahindra Marazzo

The Toyota-Maruti MPV is likely to be developed on a monocoque platform, and not a ladder-frame, like the Marazzo and the Innova Crysta. So, it is likely to be lighter than the Marazzo and, therefore, more fuel efficient as well. Also, we expect it to feature both petrol and diesel engines. Between the Innova Crysta, Marazzo and Ertiga, it’s only the Marazzo that is not on sale with a petrol engine, but it is bound to get one in 2020.

Both the Innova Crysta and the Ertiga are quite popular in their respective segments and are the top-selling MPVs in India. It will be interesting to see when and how will this new MPV be positioned in the market.
