On sale since 1938, the Beetle will be pulled off the assembly line in 2019
That the Volkswagen Beetle is finally set to bid adieu has come as a saddening news for many across the world. The last Beetle will roll out from the VW’s factory in Puebla, Mexico in July 2019. But to give the ‘Bug’ the perfect swansong, Volkswagen will be rolling out what will be called the ‘Beetle Final Edition’ soon. It will be available in two variants - SE and SEL.
The Final Edition will be offered in both coupe and convertible body styles with two unique shades - Safari Uni (moon beige) and Stonewashed Blue. Other body colours on offer include white, black and grey. The Convertible Final Edition SEL models will get a brown soft top. In terms of exterior updates, the coupe version gets a heated windscreen washer and a sunroof. In addition to this, the ‘Turbo’ insignia on the boot lid will be replaced by a ‘Beetle’ badge.
The higher-spec SEL models, on the other hand, will get Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights and fog lamps. 17-inch alloy wheels will be offered as standard on the Final Edition, just like the regular Beetle. However, the SEL variant will receive bigger 18-inch white aluminium alloy wheels which look similar to the Beetle Última Edición’s with hubcaps and white-walled tyres.
On the inside, the Final Edition SE model will receive the standard 6.3-inch capacitive touchscreen infotainment unit with Bluetooth, USB, Sirius XM, App-connect and voice command. The more premium SEL variant will get the Discover Media infotainment with navigation, Car-net safety and service, guide and inform along with Fender-branded speakers.
There will be no change to the powertrain. The Final Edition will continue to be powered by a 2.0-litre TSI engine that churns out 174PS of power and 250Nm of torque. The turbocharged motor will be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and CEO, Volkswagen America, said, “As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the US and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it. But as we have seen with the I.D. BUZZ—which is the modern and practical interpretation of the legendary Bus—I would also say, ‘Never say never’.”
So, expect VW to resurrect the Beetle under its all-electric I.D brand just like it did with the VW Bus in the form of the all-electric I.D. Buzz camper van. Volkswagen had introduced the third-gen Beetle in India in 2009 but discontinued it earlier this year due to the lack of sales. If you want to own the Beetle Final Edition, then we have some bad news for you as this model will not be coming to our country at all.
