Volkswagen Compact Sedan, Tiguan and Passat GTE to debut at 2016 Auto Expo

Update: Volkswagen has showcased the Tiguan, Ameo, Polo GTI and Passat GTE at the Expo. While Passat GTE gets an electric drive too, all others cars have a mechanical drive.

The carmaker will showcase the DZire-rivalling compact sedan, Tiguan SUV and the Passat GTE at the biennial event. The recently launched Beetle alongside other existing models will also be marking their presence at the event.

“The Delhi Auto Expo will see the World Premier of the Indian Compact Sedan (ICS) Volkswagen’s premier sub 4-metre sedan, which has been designed specifically for the Indian market, and is manufactured at the Volkswagen facility in Chakan. There has been an overwhelming response to the compact sedan category in India, and by virtue of its superior technology, class leading features and high safety standards, the ICS is expected to raise the bar in the market for this dynamic segment,” Volkswagen said in a statement.

Volkswagen has been testing their compact sedan from quite a while now. Like all other offerings in this segment, the Indian Compact Sedan(as VW calls it) is also based on its hatch counterpart Polo’s platform and measures under 4-metres, in a bid to enjoy the tax benefits. GTE is Passat’s plug-in hybrid version that packs a 156PS-1.4-litre TSI engine combined with an electric motor under the bonnet. Fusion of the two drive units puts out a system power of 218 PS and claims a driving range of over 1,000 kilometres.

Tiguan is VW’s premium SUV that’s already on sale in Europe and quite successful there. “With outstanding 4x4 performance, Tiguan is a blend of luxury, handling, safety and efficiency, fusing the global attributes of innovation and connectivity to category codes of SUVs in India,” the carmaker stated, without revealing any specific detail about the model.
