Volkswagen Group India achieves remarkable sales growth of 109.3 percent in 2011

Celebrating its tenth successful year in India, the Volkswagen Group clocked an impressive growth of 109.3% in sales from January to December 2011. The three brands – Audi, ŠKODA and Volkswagen together delivered a total of 1,11,623 vehicles to customers in 2011 as compared to 53,341 cars in 2010. 2011 has been a year of milestones at Volkswagen Group with the 50,000th and the 1,00,000th car being rolled out in quick succession from the Chakan plant in Pune. With 10 new cars being launched in 2011, Volkswagen Group increased their offerings to the Indian customers to 21 models this year.
To expand their reach in India, Volkswagen Group welcomed 56 new dealers to their dealer network which increased the total to 219 dealers in 2011. The Volkswagen Group almost doubled its market share from 2.5% in 2010 to 4.9% in 2011. Volkswagen brand delivered 76,107 passenger cars in 2011 with a growth of 151% as compared to 30,319 vehicles in 2010. ŠKODA sold 30,005 cars in 2011 marking a growth of 49.9 % as compared to 20,019 cars in 2010. Audi grew 83.5% by selling 5,511 cars in 2011 as compared to 3,003 cars sold in 2010. The local content of the models produced at Chakan plant was increased from 60 to 73 percent in 2011. The Volkswagen Group partnered very closely with its Indian suppliers and provided the necessary tooling and technical know-how. With this achievement, Volkswagen Group suppliers have started exporting parts to other Volkswagen Group locations all over the world.
Dr. John Chacko, Volkswagen Group Chief Representative India and President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited said, “Despite the volatile market condition, the Volkswagen Group India achieved a high growth in 2011. We sold 1,11,623 cars in the last year and produced 1,05,535 cars in our Chakan plant in the same time period. We strengthened our presence in India with a growth of 109.3% in sales and a growth of 180% in production at Chakan plant over 2010. The rise in production and sales figures signifies the growing acceptance of the Group in the Indian market as Volkswagen Group cars continue to gain market share in their respective segments.I am confident that our technology, design innovation coupled with dynamic product line will ensure that Volkswagen Group can continue its future growth path in India.”
