Just when everyone thought the worst was over for Volkswagen following its unprecedented emissions scandal, plunging sales reports from across the globe started coming to shatter that illusion.
Indian arm of the German carmaker has witnessed a hefty slump in sales during the month of November. Its best-seller Volkswagen Polo has posted a major 42 per cent month-on-month sales decrease. While the carmaker had sold a shade over 2000 Polos in a month before, the last month could only see 1169 Polos being delivered to the customers in the country.
Not just month-on-month, Polo’s year-on-year sales fall is even more drastic. 2843 Polos were retailed in November 2014, which means a staggering 59 percent decrease in numbers. Now, this might not be a diesel scam effect, but more related to increasing competition in the segment.
Quite recently, Volkswagen admitted to malpractice, in terms of the emission norms and said about 11 million of their cars worldwide were fitted with the ‘defeat device.’ Volkswagen Group India, in regard to this, has recalled approximately 3,23,700 cars fitted with 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre, and 2.0-litre EA 189 diesel engines that were manufactured and sold between 2008 and 2015. The recall would affect 1,98,500 units of Volkswagen cars alone, while Skoda and Audi will recall 88,700 and 36,500 vehicles fitted with the EA 189 diesel engine, respectively.
The diesel engine in question here, the EA 189, was found to emit nitrogen oxide up to 40 times above the permitted limit.
