Think of it as Volkswagen’s version of the Skoda Karoq that’s coming to India in mid-2020

VW Tarek is currently only sold in China. However, it will be launched in Brazil in 2020.

The Tarek will slot in between the India-bound T-Cross and the Tiguan as a rival to the Jeep Compass.

It is based on the MQB platform that also underpins the VW Tiguan and Skoda Karoq.

Volkswagen India could launch the Tarek here post 2020.
Volkswagen has been testing a Jeep Compass-sized SUV in Brazil called the Tarek. It is similar to the VW Tharu that is sold only in China currently.
The images of the test mule suggest that the VW Tarek could be sized similar to the Skoda Karoq that is India-bound by mid-2020. It’s underpinned by the MQB platform that also underpins the VW Tiguan, the Skoda Karoq and the India-bound VW T-Roc. Here’s how the China-spec model stacks up against its siblings and rivals in terms of size.

The Tarek could be a part of the Volkswagen’s India 2.0 growth strategy which might also include a mid-size SUV to rival the popular Jeep Compass. With the above numbers in mind, we can expect the VW Tarek to be placed between the upcoming T-Roc and the existing Tiguan in Volkswagen’s lineup.
In the Brazilian market, the VW Tarek will be powered by a 1.4 TSI petrol engine that is good for 148PS of power and 250Nm of torque. This engine will be offered with a 6-speed AT. An AWD version is expected to be introduced sometime after its initial launch in 2020. If it comes to India, the Tarek could get a petrol as well as a 2.0-litre diesel powertrain with the choice of a 6-speeed manual or a 7-speed DCT.

Although Volkswagen hasn’t revealed whether the Tarek will be launched India, we expect it be offered here post 2020. It is expected to be priced around the same ballpark as the Skoda Karoq (Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, ex-showroom). At that price, the VW Tarek will lock horns with its Skoda sibling, the Jeep Compass and the Hyundai Tucson.
