German carmaker Volkswagen has just dropped a bombshell on the people of Britain in the form of its new Polo 1.4 TSI. The Polo BlueGT is powered by a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that belts out a respectable 138bhp with 250Nm of torque. That however is not the bombshell. The bombshell is that VW claim this car can provide a mileage of 21.7kmpl! The engine uses proprietary technology in the form of a cylinder deactivation system that shuts down the second or third cylinder based on the cars performance needs and engine load.
This technology along with the engine start/stop feature in the Polo 1.4 gives it mileage figures of 21.7kmpl. The Polo 1.4 comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox or DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox). In terms of looks the Polo 1.4 looks as good as ever or even better with some design features borrowed from the Polo BlueMotion and the Polo GTi.
According to VW, if the car is driven steadily at 50kmph, the mileage may well shoot up to 27kmpl. Imagine if this kind of technology was introduced in the Polo in India. There would definitely be a rise in the Polo fan-following if that were the case. VW has however made no announcements on any such feature being a part of its Indian line-up.
