Honda has finally launched its highly anticipated compact sedan Amaze on April 11, which comes equipped with company's newly formulated made-for-India 1.5L i-DTEC diesel engine under the hood. This has been Honda's first ever diesel powered car in India and all set to sizzle the Indian roads. The increasing fuel prices have forced the Indian buyers to opt for diesel cars, and this is what makes Amaze more popular, which has already attracted many Indian car buyers. The Amaze diesel is now, in all segments, the most fuel efficient car in India (The figure which company claims and ARAI certified number 25.8kmpl). This is sure that the real world fuel efficiency will be lower. However, the major question arises that how Honda has done this miracle, which didn't have a single diesel engine before?

The 1.5 litre diesel engine is definitely the company's most popular engine, a first for Honda in India. This is a very impressive power-mill, with 100PS and 200Nm of top torque, the Amaze diesel accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in about 12.5 seconds. More interestingly, the ARAI certified fuel efficiency stands at an astonishing 25.8kmpl making the Amaze the most fuel efficient car available in India. The 1.5L diesel engine is basically a stripped down version of the company's European based 1.6 litre i-DTEC engine which duties to Civic, which is tuned to suit Indian driving conditions. The engine is coupled to a five-speed manual transmission, which transmits power to wheels.

Honda is working on a philosophy 'Man Maximum, Machine Minimum', which makes it elegant as well as aggressive. The company's high priority was on weight saving while designing this car. The evident for this is the use of a thin-walled aluminum engine block, an aluminium head and lightweight cast-iron cylinder liners. The aluminium based engines are bit noisy, as they don't have sound absorbing qualities. However, Amaze diesel is bit nosier at high speeds, still stands near to its competitors. The Japanese auto-giant has opted for an open-deck construction for an aluminium diesel engine block to further reduce the weight of the car, which is quite unusual. Basically, companies opt for a closed deck construction, which is stronger then the Open-Desk.

More Interestingly, Honda with its lubricants partner, Idemitsu, has manufactured a special engine oil, which has an ultra-low viscosity rating that further enhances the fuel efficiency figure of Amaze. The Japanese auto-maker is known for making world's most reliable and refined engine, and the same we will see in this i-DTEC engine. The firm has worked hard to reduce the mechanical friction in the engine, which company is known for doing from several years, and i-VTEC is the best example. Honda's engineers have used thinner and shorter piston fringes, which helped the company to reduce overall friction.
