Since past one year, Maruti has been trying hard to change its image from a reasonable car maker to a premium automaker. This aim further led Maruti to introduce the exclusive line of Nexa showrooms which showcases and retails company’s high-end premium products. After the S-Cross, Maruti is ready to bring in another ‘premium’ car which is the latest hatchback known as 'Maruti Suzuki Baleno'. The car started making headlines as early as June 2015 and was completely revealed to the world at Frankfurt Motor Show 2015. Since then, it has been a hot topic in the Indian automotive space and prospective buyers are eagerly waiting for this offering, which is definitely a looker.
So let's know 8 things about this most awaited launch from Maruti this year.
1. LOOKS
So, Maruti has nailed the first thing which applies to a buyer, the looks. Baleno dresses in a very elegant outlook with chrome accents on the new V-Shaped grille, partial floating roof and sturdy wheel arches, all which add to the character of the car. The appearance is Suzuki-ish but still looks like no other in the portfolio. The front fenders hold the swept-back headlamp cluster housing projectors underlined by daytime running LEDs and tiny circular fog lamps at the bottom giving the Baleno a big car feel.

2. BRANDING
The latest offering from Maruti is being called a premium hatchback. And to go with the name, Baleno will be sold out of Maruti’s exclusive line of Nexa showrooms. Maruti claims that these showrooms ‘provide a new experience of hospitality from Maruti Suzuki’.

3. INTERIORS
The most important part of a premium car is to make the user feel special while he is inside the car. The Baleno manages to do so splendidly. The cabin has a well organized simple layout and is wrapped in an all-black theme with silver accents and chrome highlights. Adding to the looks is the 7-inch SmartPlay infotainment system which sits in the center of the dashboard. This unit is also being used by the S-Cross and the Ciaz.
4. HEART
At the heart of this hunk, beats a 1.2-litre VVT petrol engine which produces 83bhp and 115Nm of torque. In the diesel department, Baleno will feature a 1.3-litre DDiS200 engine with an output of 90bhp and 200Nm of torque. The car might also feature the 1.0-litre turbocharged BoosterJet petrol engine which produces 92bhp and 170Nm of torque in the future which is currently employed in the European models. Among these, the diesel will feature Suzuki’s new SHVS technology for engine start-stop functions and a better mileage.
5. SKELETON
The new Baleno has almost nothing common to its predecessor. It is built on an all-new platform from Maruti-Suzuki which is 10% lighter and is more rigid than the old platforms. This very platform may also be used in other Maruti cars like the upcoming Swift and Dzire sedan.
6. TECHNOLOGY
Baleno will also feature Suzuki’s SHVS technology which is currently being employed in Ciaz. The Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) is based on an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) that works the Start/Stop function for the engine. In addition, it also features a Brake Energy Recovery System that charges the battery using the energy that gets generated while braking. The new technology also turns off the vehicle when idling, which in turn improves fuel efficiency.

7. RIVALRY
What defines you most is the company you go around with. With this being said, YRA aka Baleno will rival the likes of Elite i20 and the Honda Jazz which clearly define its class. Rivaling the Elite i20 is no easy task but Baleno certainly has the character to do so and make the current premium hatchback segment work hard for its money.
8. PRICE
The hatchback will lock horns with Elite i20 and Honda Jazz and is expected to be aggressively priced by Maruti. The car will be sold from the Nexa line of showrooms and is presumed to cost between Rs 5.5 to 8.5 Lac.
